At first, it may not seem like much – after all, how much good can really happen in ten, twenty or even minutes? The answer turns out to be: a lot. Houston LeBrun, president-elect of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). "You get immediate results — the employees experience stress reduction and greater satisfaction with their jobs."

Indeed, studies have shown that massage improves bottom line of employers. A study by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami found that after five weeks, a group of 26 employees who had twice-weekly, 15-minute massages in the office fared better than a control group of 24 employees who were just told to close their eyes and relax. The massaged group experienced reduced stress and improved performance, while the control group did not. Using electroencephalograms (EEG), researchers measured alpha and beta waves in both groups, and found massage recipients to be more alert. Stress hormones in the saliva of the massaged group were lower than in the control group. The massaged workers completed math problems in half the time as normal and with half the errors they had before they were massaged. The math skills of the control group did not improve. The massage recipients also said they were less fatigued and more clear-headed.

Every year, more companies are heeding the call. There are no statistics on the number of companies that offer massage therapy onsite, but those that have offered it include law firms, hospitals, manufacturers and major corporations, such as Boeing, Apple Computer, PepsiCo, Sony Music and United Airlines.

One of the main contributors to our everyday stress is our workplace. 70% of workers surveyed by a national survey stated that their job is very stressful. Stress is the #1 cause of disability. It costs employers billions of dollars a year on lost productivity and healthcare costs. Since workplace is stressful, it seems commonsense to provide some means of stress relief at the workplace. More and more employers are recognizing that a regular massage can reduce the physical and mental effects of stress, thus reducing burnout and stress related diseases.

When it comes to neck pain the best medicine is no medicine at all according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, tracked 272 patients with recent-onset neck pain who were treated using three different methods:

 Medication

 Exercise

 A Chiropractor

After 12 weeks the patients who used a chiropractor or exercised were more than twice as likely to be pain free compared to those who relied on medicine.

The patients treated by a chiropractor experienced the highest rate of success with 32 percent saying they were pain free, compared to 30 percent of those who exercised. Only 13 percent of patients treated with medication said they no longer experienced pain.

“Doesn’t surprise me a bit,” Dr. Lee Green, professor of family medicine at the University of Michigan told ABC News. “Neck pain is a mechanical problem, and it makes sense that mechanical treatment works better than a chemical one.”

Dr. John Messmer who specializes in family medicine at Penn State College of Medicine agrees.

“I always prescribe exercises and/or physical therapy for neck pain,” he wrote. “I also tell patients that the exercises are the treatment and the drugs are for the symptoms.”

The exercises prescribed to patients in the study were simple and designed to be performed at home with the help of instructional photos.

 The DOT Physical For CDL

The Department of Transportation will require you to take and successfully pass a physical and provide proof with a ‘Medical Examiner’s Certificate’. Federal law requires CDL holders to receive periodic physical examinations, called a “Department of Transportation Medical Examination”, to ensure the ability of the driver to safely operate a commercial vehicle. Trucking companies and truck drivers typically refer to the ‘Medical Examiner’s Certificate’ as a ‘DOT medical card’. Please review all the physical requirements defined by the US Department of Transportation:

You must have 20/40 correctable vision in each eye. Glasses or contact lenses are permitted.

You cannot be a diabetic on needle-injected insulin; diabetes controlled through a diet or oral medication is permitted.

Your blood pressure must be under 160/100. Prescription medication to control blood pressure is permitted.

Your blood sugar level must be under 200.

Use of a Schedule 1 drug, amphetamine, narcotic or any other habit forming drug is not permitted.

If you have a current diagnosis of cardiac insufficiency, collapse, congestive cardiac failure or any other cardiovascular disease you will be required to provide the Medical Examiner with a stress test (needs to be performed within the last 12 months) along with a release from your physician stating that you can drive a commercial motor vehicle without restrictions.

Other factors or conditions which could prevent you from obtaining the required DOT clearance include: sleep apnea, recent back injury, recent major surgery, a current hernia, or recent workmen's compensation claims. If you have questions about your medical health, please consult your physician before beginning the training program.

In conjunction with the DOT physical, CDL drivers are required to take random drug screens throughout the drivers’ employment in the trucking industry. The DOT drug screen will detect the usage of illegal narcotic drugs including marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and phencyclidine (PCP).

The Driver Solutions Network will provide you with a DOT physical & DOT drug screen during the first week of CDL training.

Sentencing of the Fraudulent Medical Review Officer

On July 31, 2009, the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy and Compliance (ODAPC) issued a Public Interest Exclusion (PIE) against Michael R. Bennett, Workplace Compliance, Inc., of Texas and North Carolina, for fraudulently acting as a Medical Review Officer on DOT-regulated drug tests without being a licensed physician.

Because a federal criminal indictment by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) was pending against Mr. Bennett, ODAPC did not make a public notification of the PIE in the Federal Register until November 17, 2009. See: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/pdf/E9-27525.pdf.

On February 18, 2010, in the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, Mr. Bennett pled guilty to wire fraud in violation of 18 USC 1343 and making false statements in a matter within the jurisdiction of a federal agency pursuant to 18 USC 1001.

On August 30, 2010, Mr. Bennett was sentenced to 22 months in federal prison. Additionally, he was directed to make restitution to the government and victims in the amount of $209,030. Upon his release from prison, Mr. Bennett will be subject to 3 years supervised release, 100 hours of community service, and a $400 special assessment. Mr. Bennett's company - which also pled guilty to wire fraud - was ordered to pay a special assessment of $1,200 and is jointly and severally responsible for the fine. Finally, the company was ordered to 36 months probation.

During sentencing, the District Court Judge emphasized that Mr. Bennett's actions had placed the public in serious harm and had violated the integrity and protections afforded by the DOT's drug testing program.

Mr. Bennett's conviction, sentencing, and PIE action represent a cooperative effort between the DOJ United States Attorneys' Office, the DOT ODAPC, the DOT Office of the Inspector General, the Federal Aviation Administration's Drug Abatement Division, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Enforcement and Compliance Office, and the DOT Office of the General Counsel. Of note were the assistance and expertise provided by qualified Medical Review Officers and drug testing laboratories.
